2001

2001 - Michael's audio introduction to "Michael Jackson: King of Pop", a biography written by Christian Marks, is released, triggered via a button inside the front cover.

January 19, 2001 - Michael donates a coat to the Movie Action for Children auction. All proceeds go to UNICEF's efforts to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission in Africa. Michael promises to donate a personal phone call on the highest bidder's birthday.

February 14, 2001 - Hundreds of fans gather inside Carnegie Hall in New York to welcome Michael to a pre-launch event panel for his new charity 'Heal The Kids'. The charities main initiative is to help restore a child's birthright to nurturing care.

March 2001 - Michael records "Butterflies".

March 4, 2001 - Michael arrives at London's Heathrow Airport on Sunday with a damaged leg in a plaster cast, following a fall at his ranch. Early Sunday afternoon, He checked in at the Lanesborough Hotel in London. He later goes shopping with friend actor Macaulay Culkin, going to the HMV records store and buying a selection of CD's.

Later, he accompanies them to the Royal Institute of British Architects to attend a brief ceremony for the launch of a new book co-written by Boteach and Geller,  "Confessions of a Rabbi and Psychic".

March 6, 2001 - Michael gives a highly personal speech at Oxford University to promote his "Heal The Kids" program, in which he expresses his appreciation for children, explains his forgiveness to his father, and urges families to reconnect with their children. Michael's donation of a birthday call and a coat to the "Movie Action for Children" auction at Sotheby's supports UNICEF's efforts to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission in Africa.

March 7, 2001 - Michael attends Uri Geller's wedding vow renewals as best man. In the evening, he attends the 10th annual "Michael Jackson Day" held by Adrian Grant at the Hammersmith Apollo Theatre.

March 8, 2001 - Michael stumbles at his hotel, further causing damage to his foot; he uses a wheelchair to get around the following days.

March 10, 2001 - Michael's short statement commending his sister Janet on her success, airs on her tribute show "MTV Icon: Janet Jackson".

March 15, 2001 - Michael's taped message for German TV show "Wetten, Dass..?", congratulating them on their 20th anniversary, airs.

March 25, 2001 - Michael launches The "Michael Jackson International Book Club". At a Newark, New Jersey Theater, he hands out books to young people to help promote reading and to encourage to parents to read bedtime stories.

April 2001 - Michael wraps up conversations with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach about his life, which he started recording in August 2000. These intimate conversations became available in Boteach's 2009 book. The conversations, free of Boteach's biased commentary found in the book, are available in the text document.

April 2001 - Michael records "Whatever Happens".

April 2001 - Michael flies artist Sisqó to meet him and Teddy Riley at Virginia Beach.

April 11, 2001 - Michael gives an apologetic refusal and statement on the telephone when a local "WAVY-TV Channel 10" reporter unexpectedly calls his Virginia Beach hotel room to ask for an interview.

~May 9, 2001 - Michael attends the 54th Cannes Film Festival and visits singer Patti Labelle's show.

May 2001 - Michael records "Heaven Can Wait".

May-June 2001 - Michael records "Threatened".

June 2001 - Michael calls Marc Schaffel with plans to do a video in which Marlon Brando would interview him and he would interview Brando at the actor’s island in Tahiti.

June 28, 2001 - Michael gets on stage at the end of the Summer Jam Concert festival in Long Island to hug rapper Jay-Z and greet the audience.

July 25, 2001 - Michael's agreement to produce the planned animated film "The Way of the Unicorn" and have a voicing role is reported.

August 13-21, 2001 - Michael shoots the 'You Rock My World' short film in Los Angeles directed by Paul Hunter and featuring Chris Tucker and a special appearance by Marlon Brando!

August 16, 2001 - Michael makes a statement on today's announcement that Whitney will be joining both nights of the 30th Anniversary concerts.

NASDAQ's executive vice president, David Weild, and NASDAQ CEO Wick Simmons present him with a glass trophy. Michael is also presented with a birthday cake and large 1934 poster of Shirley Temple as belated birthday gifts.

Michael goes to the Madison Square Garden to rehearse his duets with Britney Spears, Whitney Houston & N'Sync. In the evening, he makes a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards Ceremony to dance with N'Sync at the end of their performance.

September 7 & 10, 2001 - Michael performs with his brothers for the first time since 1984’s Victory Tour in the "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Special". After the introduction of guest performances, they perform Can You Feel It, J5 Medley, Dancing Machine (with ‘N Sync) and  Shake Your Body (down To The Ground). Without his brothers, Michael performs The Way You Make Me Feel (with Britney Spears), Black Or White (with Slash), Beat It (with Slash), Billie Jean, and You Rock My World (with Usher).

Mid-September 2001 - Michael records "You Are My Life".

September 17, 2001 - Michael speaks with Rolling Stone on his upcoming recording of "What More Can I Give" for 9/11 victims.

September 20 - October 15, 2001 - Michael records "What More Can I Give" and "Todo Para Ti"

October 2001 - Michael decides to not participate in the filming of his "Cry" music video / short film to share director's vision.

October 13, 2001 - Michael records background vocals for Jay-Z's planned "Girls Girls Girls" remix.

October 15, 2001 - Michael's call-in interview on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" during her interview with Quincy Jones to talk about how much he had learned from him, and hears the story of how his nickname "Smelly" came to be, airs.

October 16, 2001 - Michael shoots a scene for the movie 'Men In Black 2' directed by Barry Sonnefield as a cameo, where he plays Agent M.

October 21, 2001 - Michael leads "United We Stand: What More Can We Give", a benefit concert in Washington DC as tribute for the victims of the September 11 attacks. He performs "Man In The Mirror" and sings the finale song "What More Can I Give" with the other artists that night.

October 26, 2001 - Michael interviews fans through moderator Anthony DeCurtis as part of an online audio chat on Getmusic.com.

October 30, 2001 - Michael's "Invincible" album is released, including liner notes and cover art.

~October 30, 2001 - Michael interviews with "TV Guide", discussing the "30th Anniversary" special, "You Rock My World" music video, performing, dealing with the press, favorite TV shows,"What More Can I Give", the 9/11 attacks, his care for children, and desire to make films.

***November 4, 2001 - Michael gives an interview for "News of the World", talking about the anthrax attacks, the 9/11 attacks, his Invincible album, talking of marriage with Princess Diana, his father, loneliness, childhood, and the state of the world. (News of the World audio exists?)

November 7, 2001 - Michael appears at the Virgin Megastore of Times Square in New York to promote and sign copies of 'Invincible'. He is accompanied by Frank and Eddie Cascio, and his make up artist Karen Faye. He also gives several interviews to the TV shows TRL (MTV), Entertainment Tonight (CBS) et 106th & Park (BET).

December 14, 2001 - Michael interviews with "USA Today", discussing the media, the 30th Anniversary Show, exercising, where the crotch-grabbing came from, the Invincible album, fans, and his childhood.

December 19, 2001 - Michael is presented with the KIIS-FM L.A. Legend Award on 19th December, 2001 at the Los Angeles' Staples Centre. Radio host Rick Dees and basketball legend Magic Johnson presented Michael with the award.
