"Cry" Music Video / Short Film
Date range confirmed in François Allard and Richard Lecocq’s “Michael Jackson: All the Songs: The Story Behind Every Track” (“October 2001”)
Chris Cadman, author, “Michael Jackson the Maestro”
Promo short film, directed by Nick Brandt, was shot in six different locations (five in California and one in Nevada) – but didn’t feature Michael at all, as he was in dispute with Sony over the promo’s budget.
Premiered in the UK on Top Of The Pops on 2nd November 2001.
The original idea was for Michael to come in at the end of the video to link hands on a mountain top and sing the closing part of song. In the end 9/11 changed things as Michael was concerned about travelling although he was involved in the edit process of the video. Brandt convinced Michael in the end that he thought the video would be stronger without him, which seemed strange considering he was the focal point. Michael agreed with Brandt in the end.
