"Yeah" and "Whatzupwitu"
Date range assessed by the facts that the recording of these songs most likely took place after Eddie Murphy’s cameo in “Remember the Time”, whose filming took place in November 1991, that Michael’s cameo recording for “Yeah” was finished by April 16, 1992, and that the “Love’s Alright” album with these songs was released on February 23, 1993.
Note: Wikipedia states “January 22, 1992” as the recording date for “Whatzupwitu”, but can find no other source to confirm that.
“Jet” magazine (April 26, 1993)
Michael Jackson heads a list of the music industry's Who’s Who participating on Eddie Murphy’s third musical album, "Love’s Alright".
A variety of charities will benefit from proceeds from the sale of the Murphy-written single "Yeah". That single, reminiscent of "We Are the World", features such diverse voices as Michael and Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney, Julio Iglesias, Luther Vandross and Garth Brooks.
Money will be given through Murphy’s Yeah Foundation, an organization he founded soon after the single was recorded. “The Yeah Foundation is a bunch of different charities,” he recently told JET. “I used to give money to so many different charities. You write this big check and don't know where your money is going. It was like, 'Let me start my own thing.'
“We take letters from all different places. It’s not like one thing in particular. We might put somebody through school, get someone off the streets—a bunch of different things. I founded it right after we recorded "Yeah". We were in London and coming back from the studio. We had just gotten McCartney on the song. He was like the 20th big artist we had. It was like there are too many big artists on this to put it on the album and call it your song. So, I decided to donate all the money to charity and call it the Yeah Foundation.”
...The album features a duet with Murphy and Michael Jackson titled "Whatzupwitu". Murphy, along with Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Iman, appeared in Jackson’s "Remember the Time" video. “I told him that I did this 'Yeah' and 'Whatzupwitu' and asked, ‘Why don’t you sing on those songs?’ And he said yes.”
Chicago Tribune (April 16, 1992)
A lineup of superstar talent including Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Stevie Wonder have made cameo recording appearances on actor-singer Eddie Murphy`s upcoming single, ``Yeah,`` with proceeds from the cut going to various charities.
With a roster reminiscent of the ``We Are the World`` supersong, ``Yeah`` also features Jon Bon Jovi, Garth Brooks, Hammer, Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Julio Iglesias, Johnny Gill, Richie Sambora, En Vogue, Heavy D., Emmanuel Lewis and Babyface.
No label is set yet for the project, according to Murphy`s spokesman, who said negotiations are under way for a late summer release. The single will be part of Murphy`s third album, ``Love`s Alright.``
Plans are being developed for a video for the song, but nothing is firm yet. A portion of the proceeds from the single will go to the Yeah Foundation, set up to support the various artists` favorite charities.
