"You're the One"
Date range assessed by the fact that the “Jet” magazine interview with Jennifer Holliday was published on June 10, 1985, so the collaboration most likely occurred shortly before the interview itself.
Jennifer Holliday, “Say You Love Me” album notes
To Michael Jackson - I don't know why you chose me, but I'm deeply touched, very honored and mighty thankful to you for writing "You're The One" for me. Thank you for such a beautiful experience!
Jet Magazine interview (June 10, 1985)
Grammy Award-winning super-star Michael Jackson has scored another musical triumph with the pop love ballad, “You're The One”, he penned and produced for Tony Award-winning singer-actress Jennifer Holliday.
Ms. Holliday, 24, who is currently starring in the critically-acclaimed musical tribute to the late gospel legend Mahalia Jackson, titled “Sing Mahalia, Sing!”, revealed that it was a "wonderful" experience working with Michael Jackson. "I think he's just really great, really great,' she exclaimed. "He's very much a young man who knows where he wants to go; he's very direct. He's going to be so prominent in the next decade or so because he really knows what he wants to do. The ballad that he wrote for me is not a ballad you write from the tip of your head; it comes from observing and from a gift that is deep within."
The tune was recorded in one day and includes Earl Klugh and a number of other top musicians on the track. “At the end of the day we came up with something that we think is wonderful and I just hope everyone will like it”, she said.
She added, “I think everyone is going to like it, the pop audience as well as my regular R&B audience. I think it’s something they can appreciate because it’s romantic. It’s like an ‘I am Love’ type of ballad”, she revealed.
The tune is expected to hit record stores and radio stations in a couple of weeks.
