Los Angeles, California (Victory Tour)

Gerri Hirshey, “Rolling Stone” (1985)

A year ago, on a dank December night. I stood in L.A.'s Dodger Stadium watching the Victory Tour dissolve. Randy Jackson tore off his shirt and fed it to the girls. LaToya preened. Emmanuel Lewis danced with himself. And with the flat certainty of a NASA spokesman, Michael Jackson disengaged from the spent family engine. "It's been a long 20 years," he said. "This is our final farewell tour as a family." He exited through pastel smoke, fired his thruster rockets and burned off solo.
