"Popswop" Magazine Interview

Date of publication confirmed in Chris Cadman’s “Michael Jackson the Maestro”

“Popswop” magazine (August 11, 1973), from Chris Cadman’s “Michael Jackson the Maestro” (article summary/quotes)

This was a popswop series in which a fan was chosen to ask the questions to their favourite star. Tina Cannon won the honour to question Michael for an issue in August, 1973.

Highlights from the interview included:

What quality he admired in a person:

“There are so many, but one of them is dedication, to whomever or whatever you’re into. I really believe that if you’re going to do anything, you should do it well.”

How he felt about being the star of the group:

“It really doesn’t have that much effect on me. It’s nice of course, but as far as I’m concerned I’m a member of The Jackson Five first, and Michael Jackson, soloist, second. I don’t really know that I am the star of the group, ‘cos all my brothers have large followings, especially Jermaine – he’s got loads of fans back home.”

Favourite TV show:

“Mmmm, let me think. A programme I try not to miss is ‘Hawaii 5-0.”

Favourite singers:

“That’s easy! Sammy Davis Jr,’ Lou Rawls and, of course, Diana Ross.”
