"Alpha Bits" Commercial / "Associated Press" Interview

Date confirmed in “Associated Press” (“They had to report to Columbia studio for the filming of a breakfast-food commercial… They had performed to a sellout crowd at the Hollywood Bowl the night before [on August 22, 1971 (archived)], but still had enough energy to bounce through the commercial and ride their bikes around the Columbia lot.”)

List of commercials (Will be available here soon), from Chris Cadman’s “Michael Jackson the Maestro”:

Airship No.1 – featured the Jackson 5 floating away in a balloon, while singing and talking about the breakfast cereal.

Airship No.2 – featured the group singing ABC, with Michael saying, ‘Can you dig it? Well, you got it – that’s our smash hit, ABC!’

Bunk Beds – featured Michael waking up, sliding down a fire pole, and joining his brothers at the breakfast table, singing, ‘Give me a U, give me a P, getting up with Alpha Bits is E-Z!’

Convertible Car & Park – featured the Jackson 5 running around in fast motion, with Michael singing, ‘Give me an A, give me a B, gotta have my Alpha Bits with ABC!’

Over The Fence – featured the Jackson 5 looking over a fence, as three kids learn letters from their cereal; free magic trick also mentioned.

Class Room – Featured the Jackson 5 singing the jingle in a recording type scene, the class room, in concert type close up and eating the cereal.

Sugar Smacks – featured the Jackson 5 singing ‘I’ll Be There,’ with a cartoon character talking about the free records on the back of Super Sugar Crisp and Super Orange Crisp breakfast cereals.

A couple of other commercials are rumoured to have been made, but were probably not released: one with the Jackson 5 in a clubhouse, and the second with the group sitting around a piano and eating cereal. The latter also shows Michael’s brothers rolling him around inside a giant cheerio (stills from this commercial are known to exist).
